The village of Robertsbridge is thought to date back to 1176, when a Cistercian abbey was founded by Abbot Robert De St Martin. The name Robertsbridge was first used in 1198 when Richard I granted a market charter. Although the abbey was dissolved in 1538, the village flourished, and many of its oldest houses date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. The characterful High Street boasts a collection of attractive historic houses and cottages.
